BACKGROUND

A customer in the Middle East has a number of horizontal wells with extreme lateral lengths, many greater than 20,000 ft, where they need to acquire production logs. Two wells of the wells had been attempted previously using other service providers, but in both cases, they were unable to reach the total depth (TD) and obtain the required data. In October 2016, Welltec® and one of their channel e-line partners were given the opportunity to attempt a third well. The objective was to acquire flowing production log (PLT) data over a lateral length of ~ 19,500 ft in a well with TD of ~ 27,500 ft. Success required recording data from the PLT sensors in real time while simultaneously running the Well Tractor® to convey the tool to bottom, also known as logging while tractoring (LWT).

OPERATION

Extensive pre-job planning incorporated simulations of the wellbore incorporating previous Well Tractor® operating results for accuracy in determining lift and drag forces for proper e-line cable selection. The Well Tractor® was configured with ‘reverse tractor’ capability as a contingency option for the operator.

With the well on production of ~ 4,500 bbl/day, the Well Tractor® successfully conveyed the 136 ft long toolstring to TD while acquiring the PLT data in real time on the down pass. The toolstring was then pulled from the well, capturing PLT data in an up pass and accomplish the intervention’s objectives.

ACHIEVEMENTS

The job planning and system integration accomplished by Welltec® with their e-line channel partner allowed the job to be carried out safely and successfully, providing the client previously unobtainable knowledge of the reservoir’s production. The LWT and PLT data acquired in the two passes was of high quality precluding the need for extra runs, saving time and reducing cost.

Three new world records for horizontal logging were achieved while performing this job:

  • the longest, single pass overall distance tractored (~ 22,951 ft or 6,996 m);
  • the longest, single pass distance tractored in a horizontal section (~ 19,500 ft or 5,943 m);
  • and, subsequently, the longest, single pass distance tractored while acquiring real time logging data (LWT).
